About

Promoting Cultures of Peace for Children is a non-profit society dedicated to bringing about a culture of peace for children.

Acts of Transformation: from War Toys to Peace Art asks children and youth to surrender their war toys so that they may be transformed into works of art. Voluntary surrendering of a war toys is a conscience step towards a culture of peace. Decommissioning the toy is a mindful act that renders a violent toy to passive object. Transforming the object into a work of art is an action that promotes peace. The art inspires others towards a culture of peace.

The society is working to encourage, to inspire, to motivate and to cultivate an educational environment that will create capacity and community support for the understanding and growth of this Peace Education Project in schools and school districts throughout British Columbia.

The society is advocating and promoting this Peace Education Project as a 2010 Olympic Truce Activity for children and youth. We envision a Vancouver Olympic Truce Peace Education Showcase that would build support and understanding for the Olympic Truce in a uniquely Canadian way.

The society is working to establish a Centre for a Culture of Peace for Children as a legacy for the 2010 Olympic Truce and the UN International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non Violence for the Children of the World: 2001 to 2010. The Centre would enable children and youth of BC to become involved in the Olympic Truce movement that aspires to contribute to a peaceful future for humanity through the educational value of sport.

Centre for a Culture of Peace for Children

The Centre would be a Peace Education Showcase for children and youth. It would feature Peace Art and other Peace Education initiatives created by young people. Development and promotion of a peace education curriculum for children and youth would be another focus of the Centre.

The Centre would advocate for children’s welfare and well being by engaging in a deeper understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The focus would be the articles from the Convention that state support for all children to have the right to protection from violence, abuse, exploitation created by war and to protection from recruitment into the armed forces. The Centre would link with other organizations to find ways to eliminate child soldiers on our planet.

We would gift this concept to the 2012 London Olympic Games and the Olympic Truce Foundation. Hopefully they would accept this gift of creating Centres of Cultures of Peace for Children. Then every two years in another city of the world we would have another Centre for a Culture of Peace for Children. In this way, the next generation of children and youth would have the skills and knowledge with which to create: Peace and Social Justice on Earth.

The purpose of the Promoting a Culture of Peace for Children Society of BC is to work on and organize education projects and activities that promote a culture of peace and non violence for Children.
